<image:title>About - Equity and Diversity</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe in the power of a more equitable news and information ecosystem to advance justice across race and class. We apply a racial and class equity lens to understand the roots of inequities in local news and information, how these structures persist, and how to dismantle them. We invest in a wide range of trusted messengers in North Carolina that reflect the full spectrum of people and organizations serving our state. We amplify diverse perspectives and stories often excluded or misrepresented in mainstream media.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Transparency and Accountability</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that building trust is as essential for organizations serving communities as it is for funders who back them. We are open about our grantmaking process and what we learn from the field with our grant partners. We facilitate opportunities for funders and partners to collaborate in an environment built on integrity and respect. We deliver on what we say, because being a reliable partner is our first job.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Accessibility and Inclusion</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that news and information, coalitions, and philanthropy all work best when we center community needs and leadership. We invest in organizations that increase access to information across language, geography, and other systemic barriers. We strive to make philanthropy and funding more accessible at each point in the grantmaking process. We learn from and regularly engage diverse leaders from across the state in our strategy and funding decisions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the Fund, we take a community-centered approach to our grantmaking. We invest in a wide range of roles in our news and information ecosystem, with the goal of building a stronger media landscape that serves all of North Carolina. We identify grant partners through structured application processes, ongoing research, and deep engagement with the field — listening, learning, and building relationships across the state. In an effort to minimize the time and energy organizations spend seeking funding, we do not currently accept unsolicited proposals. As our funding allows, we will open calls to new proposals for support. We will share application information on our website and newsletter for those opportunities if and when they occur. <image:caption>Lizzy Hazeltine turns the Fund's strategic statewide vision into effective action by mobilizing funders and partners around local news and information that serves North Carolina's communities. She refines and drives the organization's proven impact model, supports other funders building ecosystems, and carries the banner for Press Forward North Carolina and Press Forward Charlotte. Lizzy helps teams solve real problems, grow revenue to sustain themselves, and deepen their service to their communities. She applies hard-won lessons from local media, early-stage venture capital, and product management to build teams' capacity for service and sustainability. As Director, Lizzy Hazeltine leads the North Carolina Local News Lab Fund’s overall strategy and portfolio, supports funders to maximize their impact, cultivates connections among organizations in the North Carolina news ecosystem, and tracks and amplifies case studies and lessons learned. With the goal of making the Fund and philanthropy more accessible, Lizzy holds open office hours, and especially encourages those who are new to grant seeking to connect. She also coaches teams in various national news transformation programs and supports industry-wide learning around revenue and DEI. <image:caption>Jemima Abalogu (she/her) executes financial operations to support the Fund’s stewardship, grantmaking, and core operations. Jemima brings strategic expertise in participatory grantmaking, youth leadership development, and justice-centered philanthropy to her work at the North Carolina Local News Lab Fund. Her commitment to building accountable funding practices and centering the voices of those closest to the issues has shaped her approach to operations and grant management. Jemima's dedication to advocacy work began in high school as the Youth Justice Ambassador for the Texas Center for Justice and Equity, where she researched and authored "Reversing The Pipeline to Prison in Texas: Ensuring Safe Students and Safe Schools." This experience sparked a career focused on transforming how resources reach grassroots organizations. As a youth movement leader with the Visionary Freedom Fund, she helped design participatory grantmaking processes and directed over $3.6 million to organizations in the American Youth Justice Movement. Also serving as the Grant-Making & Operations Associate at the Piece by Piece Fund, she has managed the distribution of over $1.4 million to 59 organizations across 42 states while coordinating comprehensive training programs for grantees. Jemima holds a Master of Science in Philosophy and Public Policy from The London School of Economics and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Philosophy & Social Justice from Loyola University Chicago.</image:caption>
